a.     describe how optical fibre may be used in medical applications

Optical fibre is contained in medical instrument called an ‘endoscope’, which is a flexible tube. Optical fibres can come in use of medical applications because it can be passed through the mouth into the digestive system to provide doctors with images that can be magnified up to four times the original size.

b.     Identify the traditional medical techniques that optical fibres might replace.

Optical fibres could replace healthcare monitoring for patients that need continuous medical assistance, due to the fact that these optical fibres are able to measure vital physiological parameters such as respiratory movements, cardiac activity, pulse movement, and the temperature of the body without any harm to the patient. Laser surgery is also a new technique that has been invented through the breakthrough of the invention of optical fibres, which allows surgeons to operate deep inside the brain and ear. The laser beam vaporizes unwanted tissues and has the added advantage of being bloodless.

c.      Evaluate the benefits of fibre optic technology to medicine

Fibre optic technology has advanced all medicine, so that there is use of minimally invasive surgery, which has made procedures less painful and has improved recovery times, by being able to get a better and more accurate diagnosis of the medicine to improve it.
