THE ELIZABETHAN SOCIETY:

The Elizabethan society delt with crimes by sentencing the person that had committed the crime to death. Many punishments and executions were witnessed by hundreds of people. Executions by beheading were considered the least brutal of execution methods of the many. The most dreadful punishments are such as, being Hung, Drawn and Quartered.

Society in Elizabethan England was changing and the number of poor people living in abject poverty was increasing. The poor were divided into three categories, which were the ‘Deserving Poor’, the ‘Deserving Unemployed’ and the ‘Undeserving Poor’.

 THE GLOBE THEATRE:

The original structure of the Globe Theatre stood until 29 June, 1613, when its thatched roof was set on fire caused by a cannon that was fired in a performance of Henry VIII and the Globe theatre burnt to the ground.

The Globe theatre was reconstructed in 1614. In 1642, an anti-theatre regime was put into place closed down all of England’s theatres. Two years later, the globe theatre was torn down.

 THE KING’S CHAMBERLAIN MEN:

The King’s Men were the actors to which belonged to Shakespeare during most of his career.

The King’s Men, Originally called the Chamberlain’s Men, which was sort of like a company, and it was the most respected and financially successful company of its day. Under the support of the King, the company had a major influence on the development of many dramas.

 AN OVERVIEW OF MY PLAY:

I along with my group performed the Shakespearean play ‘Macbeth’. Macbeth is a play about power, telling a story about a character Macbeth, and his thriving ‘goal’ of becoming the king, in which he has to murder his friends to get to the top.

Overall, I think my group along with myself did an alright job in re-writing the script so it’s a modern version of the original version, and even in performing our version of the play.

TRADEGIES, COMMEDIES AND HISTORIES:

There are many Shakespearean plays, in which are comedies, such as,’ Love’s Labour’s lost’, ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’, a later work ‘Measure for Measure’, and the ‘Tempest’.

There are also many tragedies that Shakespeare wrote, such as, ‘Hamlet’, ‘Macbeth’, and more……….

Several of Shakespeare’s historical plays feature ancient characters, but the Greeks he depicted were significantly less accurate historically than the Roman characters.

Shakespeare’s works were based on the Roman past, and he often focused on the philosophies and values by which these ancient people lived.

REVELANCE OF PLAYS TO THE 21ST CENTURY:

Shakespeare’s plays, apart from being humourous or sad, and enjoyable, have very intelligent and relevent teachings to them, these teachings weren’t just relevant to the people back when Shakespeare was alive, but are still relevant today, as these teachings are still able to teach young people and even adults, about many things, including, power isn’t everything, if it means losing your friends and family, to be forgiveful to anyone that has been hurt or has hurt, and more.

TYPICAL FEATURES OF A SHAKESPEAREAN PLAY:

There are many features of a Shakespearean play, such as:

  • All of his plays are very dramatic, and emotional plays, whether these emotions are sadness, happiness, anger, etc….
  • There is always a meaning or teaching behind his plays.
  • There is always a main charcter that the entire play is concentrated on.
  • His plays were written in ‘ye old’ english.
  • His plays were written in iambic pentameters, which is a rhyme scheme in which each line consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet.
  • and more…….

1. Analyse the way Language, structure and visual techniques have been used to attract the viewer, and make the product appealing.

This poster advertising ‘Nike’ attracts the intended viewers by using techniques, such as, Language, structure and visual techniques. These techniques are used to make the product that is being advertised more appealing and noticeable to the audience that they are advertising this product to.

Language is one the major technical parts of this advertisement; it has been used throughout this poster. Language has been used in different forms in this advertisement, such as, metaphors, similes, and persuasive devices such as slogans, adjectives etc…..

Language examples in this image are, such as:

·        ‘I’m ready, your not, here I come’. This is obviously the slogan that Nike has used for this type of shoe, as it is targeting the audience in a way that being without this specific type of shoe they won’t be ‘ready’ for anything including sport, and more……, and that way it will persuade them to buy this shoe in order to become like this famous basketball player in the advertisement.

·        The word written across the basket baller’s jumper ‘Lakers’ which is the team in the NBA that is representing Nike in this advertisement. This one word will persuade this team’s fans even more to buy this shoe as it is represented by their favourite team.

·        The name of the shoe, ‘zoom Kobe I’. This is there as an important piece of information rather than to persuade or attract viewers.

·        There is also the site, which stands out and will influence viewers to go to their website to do such things as order online, find more information, etc…

The structure of the advertisement refers to focusing on the celebrity (Kobe), and how these shoes refer to how he lives his life. This is done by using 4 out of the 5 sections of the poster, to just show this celebrity, doing things such as walking in the street, playing basketball, listening to some music, and in a car. These images of him are probably implying that these shoes are able to be worn when doing anything, Such as, driving a car and playing basketball, as in the picture, and this will persuade the audience even more to buy this shoe.

The main technique to this advertisement and any other advertisement is the visual appeal about it, and to make it visually appealing they used a layout, a colour scheme, including logos, a reading path, different shots and angles, and the lighting of the image.

These different visual techniques are represented in this image by:

·        Laying it out so that it is if this basketballer has his whole life revolved around this shoe.

·        Using a greyish, dull colour to represent the celebrities personal reflection to this shoe, also to make it look like he can’t stop thinking about this shoe.

·        They have included their logo obviously to show the audience that this shoe belongs to the Nike brand.

·        There are different shots and angles used in this advertisement, such as, close ups, low angle shots, full body shots, and mid shots are used to different perspectives towards how the shoe has effected the basketballer’s life.

·        The lighting used for each section of the advertisement is so that the main subject of the image is lit up, so that it is represented as the important part of the image, while the background is dim or darkened so that the viewers will pay less attention to it and more to the main subject.

ANALYSIS

This advertisement that I have found is advertising a particular tour group that goes by the name of the ‘Super Sightseeing Tour’.

This advertisement has used all the basic techniques, such as, using composition, colours, and also shots and vectors, to be more appealing and noticeable, so that it will attract the viewers.

The composition of this advertisement follows the structure of using a left and right, Top and Bottom, and also Centre and margin.

·        The left side is the given ideology (attitude or belief), which in this advertisement shows us, and makes the viewers believe that, when joining this tour group you will travel around in a nice looking and comfortable coach (bus), and travel around places, such as, san francisco.

·        The right/bottome of the advertisement ‘shows off’ the new information or product. In this case this advertisement is telling the viewers about some new information, which is that they now ‘pick up at south city and Airport hotels’, while giving out their phone number along with their website for viewers to make reservations for.

·        The top of this advertisement shows the viewers the promises made by showing the places, in which you will visit throughout the tour, which appeals to the audience by telling them what they would be doing along the trip.

·        Towards the centre point of the advertisement is the most important part of the advertisement, and in this case there is a rectangular box stating the name of their tour group that they made stand out by using a drop shadow along with using a bright colour.

Along with the composition of the advertisement, the colour of the advertisement helps in attracting the viewer’s attention, as it makes it more appealing visualy. This advertisement has used a mixture of two colours, which are yellow and blue. These two colours have a psychological meaning to them, which are:

·        Yellow because it is the most visible colour of them all, and also because it’s high reflectance and brightness will catch any eye in any environment, it is also upbeat, modern and optimistic.

·        Blue because it is associated with loyalty, it implies coolness and distance and is also a clean colour of elegance.

The vectors of advertisements are used to guide the ‘reading path’ of the viewers eyes around the image. The vectors almost always lead the eyes in a reading path that finished to focus on the product.

The reading path of this advertisement follows the movement of the wire connected to the site in the background, down to the bus, which is at a specific angle that make it almost look like it is looking at the right/bottom section of the advertisement, which makes the viewers follow that path until it reaches the focus point of the ad, which is in the top/left corner.

1. What changes have you made?

I have made changes to the poem to show what Australia is like now, such as:

original line:

Still in the dying darkness, still in the forest dim

Appropriated line:

Still in the person’s late morning, 5 a.m.

2. Why? What does it tell us about changes in Australia?

This appropriated line shows that the working nature of Australia has completely changed, like as I have said the person’s late morning is 5 a.m.

3. What techniques have you used to reveal these changes?

I didn’t really use any techniques of my own or from the poem that I have chosen to transform this poem into a vision of the modern day.

4. If you used a technique, why did you choose it? How is it effective in creating meaning?

I didn’t use techniques.

Analysis Of The Rabbits, DPS: 4

 READING AND UNDERSTANDING ‘THE RABBITS’

The message put forward of the book is to show the audience a simpler story of the British (in this case the rabbits) settlement and how that made the Aborigines life painful and miserable.

Using rabbits as participants for the British conveys the message that the British were like rabbits, by spreading quickly, took over land that already belongs to someone, and they come in great masses to wherever they want to settle. All these points refer to the British a lot.

The images in the book are always exaggerated to make the image stand out, like on DSP 4, the ship is shown as an enormous thing, that looks like it came down from the heavens, also the colour in the image makes it look superior to everything else.

Colour in this book is one of the most important things of the book because just by looking at the colours it can set the mood of the scene portrayed in the book.

REPRESENTATIONAL MEANINGS

The double spread that I have chosen has one image that attracts my gaze, and that is the image of the exaggerated ship. It attracts my attention to it because, as I have outlined, it is exaggerated, by being exaggerated the ship has been enlarged to make it look like it is powerful, and superior. Also the colour of the ship attracts your attention because of it’s brightness.

Symbols in the text are ‘came’ and ‘water’. These symbolise how the British used to travel when they explored, it also symbolises the ship in the image. A symbol in the images are colour because it really gives a powerful message to the viewer, like in this image the colour symbolises the power that the British had.

INTERACTIVE MEANINGS

Offers on the DSP are the rabbits. When you look at this double page your attention doesn’t get dragged to the rabbits because they are offers, they are not looking directly at the viewer, instead they are looking in the opposite direction.

A  demand in the image is the ship. It is a demand because it has been exaggerated to a certain extent were it has been enlarged to make it stand out to the viewer, it almost seems as if the ship is actually starring into your eyes.

The distance between the images and the viewer is very close, and the angle is low aiming up towards the rabbits, the ship and the rest of the image. It does this to make the rabbits and the ship look almost inferior to anything in it’s way.

The modality in the double page are high, the colours are bright and strong to show that the participents are powerful and strong. There is a lot of illumination in the double spread, balancing between dark and bright colours. The background of this double spread is very highly contextualised meaning that it is very detailed and very specific, in what it is trying to show the audience.

COMPOSITIONAL MEANINGS

The double page that I have chosen has a lot of informational value. When I look at the double spread the  importance of the participents is determined by where they are positioned, e.g. the ship is in the centre of both pages which says to me that the ship is of importance to the image and message being portrayed.

The salient or most important feature of this double page is the ship. It is important to the double spread because without it you wouldn’t be able to understand the story being told by this double spread page because this page is trying to show how advanced and amazing the British inventions were to the Aborigines.
